Why this coffee?

Besides the delicious coffee, one thing we love about Ratnagiri is their way of working. Their mission.

They are pushing the boundaries of coffee processing and precision. Not to create insane flavors to mimic a packet of bubblegum or aromatised tea. They are pushing the limits to create beautiful flavors and flavor clarity to put their cultivars, their land, heritage and Indian coffee in general on a pedestal.

We cupped through many different lots, some sent strait from the farm and some from one of their importing partners, Osito. We found this lot a beautiful intersection of our expectations of a very high quality coffee from southern India with added aromatic clarity from expert processing.

The expertise goes all the way till the end, the drying, sorting and vacuum packaging is all done in a bid to push Indian coffee to the next level.

Thanks !

History

The coffee heritage of the Ratnagiri estate

Our story begins in 1927, when my late grandfather, Patre K Shivappaiya, embarked on an extraordinary journey. Driven by a vision and passion for coffee, he acquired this land, then partly covered by jungle. With unwavering dedication, he began clearing the land and planting the first coffee seeds in early 1929. Patience and perseverance became our guiding principles as we nurtured these saplings, finally welcoming the first harvest in 1934.

The legacy was then passed on to my father, who continued to run the estate with the same dedication. In 1989, the torch was passed to me, and I have had the privilege of carrying on the tradition of the Ratnagiri Estate ever since.

Over the years, the Ratnagiri estate has transformed into a thriving coffee paradise. We are committed to honoring the legacy of those who came before us, while constantly innovating and striving for excellence. Through generations of passion and hard work, we have become one of the leading specialty coffee farms in India.

Ratnagiri Estate is nestled in the Western Ghats of southern India. As part of a tiger reserve, we coexist peacefully with the rich wildlife, contributing to the biodiversity and sustainability of the region.

Our coffee export journey began in 1994, following the Indian government's liberalization of exports. Since then, we have been exporting our coffees to the American, European, Australian, Japanese, and Middle Eastern markets. Today, we supply the global specialty coffee market, producing high-quality processed coffees with distinctive flavor profiles.

Our vision
Our vision is based on two fundamental pillars:

Elevating Indian Coffee to the World Stage

We are committed to producing exceptional coffee that showcases the immense potential of Indian beans. Through careful cultivation and meticulous processing, we strive to create a product that rivals the finest specialty coffees from around the world.

Paving the way for a future of innovation and consistency

Looking ahead, our vision goes beyond mere excellence to embrace innovation, technology, and a rigorous scientific approach. We envision a future where our commitment to cutting-edge innovation and advanced technology converges with rigorous scientific methodology to consistently produce exceptional coffee. In doing so, we aspire to propel Indian coffee to new heights and pave the way to the next frontier of excellence. At Ratnagiri, our vision is not limited to what we accomplish today, but encompasses the limitless possibilities we strive to unlock for tomorrow.

Our coffee

At Ratnagiri, our goal is unwavering: to produce premium, high-quality specialty coffees with distinct flavor profiles. Since 2015, we have been undergoing a transformation process, gradually shifting our entire production from commercial and entry-level coffees to premium, optimal specialty coffees. Today, we are proud to say that our production is almost entirely dedicated to specialty coffee.

We believe this approach is the only viable long-term path. Our success is built on innovation and a scientific foundation that underpins our entire process. This commitment allows us to consistently deliver exceptional coffee, set new standards in the industry, and showcase the true potential of Indian specialty coffee.

Founders

Ashok Patre
My journey at Ratnagiri Estate began in 1989, when I took over the farm. The first few years were spent replanting the entire estate with new varieties. From 2000 to 2014-2015, we focused on cultivating these young plants. In 2016, we branched out into specialty coffee, producing our first honey-treated and natural coffee.

Divya Patre
Divya Patre plays a crucial role in overseeing harvesting activities and training our workforce. Her expertise ensures that only the finest cherries are selected. Her dedication to excellence and hands-on training contribute significantly to our success in producing exceptional specialty coffees.
