Why this coffee ?
This one is really unique.
Not just because it is a 100% caturra lot from a region and a country dominated by castillo and variedad colombia. But because for a washed coffee it has an rare aromatic mix of blueberry and chocolate with a nice tartness on the finish.
It is one of those coffees that totally caught out eye on the cupping table. One we had to come back to a few times to understand it. I am not sure we still have.
And despite the fruity character of this coffee, it has a clean and fresh bright of a washed coffee. It is one of many Colombian coffee this year we are working through to showcase their expertise in producing clean and interesting coffees. From the specialty coffee point of view, we want to put a spotlight and document that fact that in a market flooded with exotic processing, co-fermentation, re-hydration, etc, magic can still happen when the basics are done to perfection.

Story
This coffee comes from the buying team at Nordic Approach who hae a close working relationship with Coocentral. A quality focused cooperative in Huila that is able to follow exceptional lots from hard working producers right until the end of the production chain.
Coocentral serves as the primary cooperative in Central Huila, with members typically owning farms ranging from 2 to 3 hectares at altitudes between 1400 to 2000 metres above sea level. The main varieties cultivated are Caturra, Castillo, and Variedad Colombia.
The cooperative boasts 3747 members, of which 2098 are active contributors, delivering their parchment to reception points in various local villages (Veredas). Purchase points are located in Gigante, Garzon, Guadalupe, Suaza Tarqui, Pital, and Agrado. The harvest season in Central Huila spans from May to July and October to December.
Since 2005, Coocentral has invested 2.8 million USD in social programs. These initiatives encompass housing, university education, healthcare support (e.g., Coocentral covers 50% of hospital bills), funeral expenses, infrastructure development on farms, bonuses for fertiliser purchases made through the coop, life and natural disaster insurance, an in-house education system for young growers and growers' children, as well as pension funds. Growers receive 100% of the premium paid above the current market and daily purchasing prices.
